The Powerboat Nation has no boundaries! We have friends everywhere building some of the most impressive water rockets in the world. Here is one of WARSPEED Racing’sfounder Troy Worsey’s latest projects and an example of Aussie power at work. Troy was kind enough to pull back the veil and give us a look at what they are currently building as well as give us a look into some of their other handy work. With over 18 years in the engine building business and having been around boats since he was a child, It seems in this part of the world the passion and pastime of boating leads directly to Ski racing. Troy learned to ski at just 4 years old and was entered in his first ski race at 6. This very early and young entry laid the foundation for a full throttle future. Over the last 5 years WAR SPEED has grown into their own prepping and building their own race boats as well as building engines for customers. Troy exclaims “all of our boats are for Ski Racing or for the fast social boat scene.”

Like so many of the world’s best builders Troy started as an enthusiast and has grown his brand into a strong leader in the Australian performance marine market.. The future for WARSPEED is to remain under acceleration. They will continue to offer custom speed boats as well as open an all new parts and accessories offerings for the Australian and Asian markets.

Current projects include this example that is running Garrett GTX4202R ball bearing turbos. Troy said these work great for 1100hp with a 60 compressor a/r and a 1.440 turbine a/r ratio. The engine is 556ci twin turbo, intercooled and injected. The turbos are not water jacketed. It’s running a full MoTeC ECU and Data Logger with 8 EGT’s, Duel Lambda and all pressure and temp sensors.

A turbo 400 transmission and a full dry sump Mercury Racing #6 drive. The engine is making around 1500Hp and is one of their specialties. Troy believes there is nothing that can match turbo power and sees it as the future for all HP marine engines.

Troy and the crew at WARSPEED Racing have been doing recent installs of the Whipple Supercharger product line and are soon to be installing the new Mercury Racing Twin Turbo QC4v 1100 and 1350 motors. They are anxious to test the new Hardin Marine twin turbo offering when it is finally made available.

In 2007 when John LoRusso bought his 1990 35 Fountain he couldn’t of imagined where and how it would all end up. For about three years after getting the boat he ran around Lake Erie and had a great time. But as things sometimes go with only a few hours on the motors according to the hour meters one of the engines let go and needed to be pulled.

This is where as some projects go, they grow into something much more than we may have initially planned for. First the engines came out. John Montgomery of Performance Boat Rigging from Erie, Pa got the nod to do the rebuilds. The naturally aspirated 502’s that made about 385 HP in stock form were torn down. Upgrades included new Mercury 500 EFI Cams, Dart Iron Eagle Heads, Brodix Intake, Crane Roller Lifters, Hex Adjust Timing Chains, 950 Pro System Carburetors, and Mr. Cool closed cooling system. Also added were new MSD distributors and ignition as well as all new Stainless Marine Exhaust. The starters and alternators were rebuilt. TylerCrocket Marine Engines in Ruby, Mich. provided engine specifications for assemble and all the parts. John finished the engine builds bringing the power to 563 HP on the dyno.

Now you could just throw the boat back together but after all that work and fresh engine paint why you would want too. John took the time to go through the boat, a complete redo of the bilge was in order; they stripped, sanded, grinded, primed, and painted. All new hoses, wires, brackets, clamps, bilge pumps, blower motors, everything! New Hardin Marine Sea Strainers and Eddie Marine Battery Boxes were added. Since the boat didn’t come with hydraulic steering, all new IMCO hydraulic steering was installed. At the helm a new Latham Helm was installed but not before rebuilt gauges and new Latham Throttles were re-rigged on brand new Innotech dash panels that was finished off with a new steering wheel.

The cockpit interior was in great shape so just the addition of some cup holder upholstery pieces was added. However the old windscreen was wrecked and needed to be completely redone. Calls to Fountain went nowhere, and calls to everyone else brought zero reasonable options. So what does a creative guy with a background and skill in construction and finish carpentry do? Well hell he buys all the tools and materials needed to rebuild all the acrylic parts himself. John made all the parts, he has an oven to heat the material and shape it to the exact size, dimension, and form to be just like the original. So now for everyone else who needs the same or similar service John can provide it. Working out of a new shop area set up at BrandX Hi-Performance Marine here in Pompano Beach, Fl John has everything set up to provide new designs or complete replacement for just about any windshield. For now he cant do compound curves but in about three months his new oven will be ready and he will have the capability to do full wrap windscreens for cats and v bottoms.

Oh I almost forgot. Why stop with the boat. The trailer got lots of attention with new center bungs, tool box’s, spare tire holders, bow stop, winch, and a drive guard.

Powerboat Nation …Truth, Lies, and (NO) Video tape…….

Like many things in life what we imagine, perceive, and intend is often much different than what life is in reality. Such is the case of PowerboatNation.Com. PowerboatNation came about in a unique and interesting way. For quite a while now there has been conversation of common theme by many players in the performance boat world; The general themes is something like this, “How come our sport or pastime has lost a certain connection and the same camaraderie, spirit, fun and excitement we used to have is gone?” Is it evolutionary change, Maybe in part the strain of the economic downturn, or is it just time, pressure, and perspective? I just couldn’t get out of my mind what I believed was the problem. There were a number of indicators that could be easily be seen. The web based communities that were once started and fueled by boaters for boaters were now run by corporate giants, most of the magazine industry that had fed this sport for so many years refused to make changes, began to suffer the reject of the community and drop like flies. New ventures in the print and online failed quickly. My nature is that of a fixer, I am not a good fan, I don’t follow football as a fan, I played Hockey so I am a Hockey fan and I miss skating. So my nature is to do something rather than just talk and bitch about it. I wanted to create a positive difference to this sport and so rather than sit around and continue to listen to the complainers we put this thing in gear and began looking for rpm and speed. I do believe that unless we bring positive awareness and a new lifestyle hook to performance boating it might just fade away and industry efforts such as “Discover Boating” miss us completely.

So far with PowerboatNation we are receiving nothing but overwhelming accolades. Everyone we talk with likes what we are doing and where we are headed, which brings great validation for me and everyone involved. I don’t believe everyone likes it so I can only assume those that done, don’t care or are too #%$&^#(# to say anything to me about it. So I am again working harder at it than maybe I ever planned too, but they say if you love what you do its not really work. Well I do love it but yeah its a lot of work. And truth be told I couldn’t have done this or even begun the journey without the tremendous efforts, financial commitment, and support from a number of people. My family foremost and companies I couldn’t have even imagined. All of this support has lead to some confusion and posturing (Jealousy Maybe I don’t know), So I just felt it was time to clear the air. Tell the truth, smash the lies and (so far no video tape) and give some credit and some transparency to the PowerBoatNation brand.

The brand of PBN different, so is our style, our goal, our objective, and I think there may be some confusion as to who we are, what we do, and where we are going, and undoubtedly how we got here. So stay with me and I’m going to tell what I maybe kind of cool and revealing.

For a long time now I have had a vision, a dream, or at times a nightmare may be a better descriptor. The bottom line is to build something extraordinary that is truly rewarding to the sport, be power boating focused, and related in a way to really make a difference. Lets face it most people in the media part of the industry are in it for money, whether lead here by the fallout out from the magazine industry or huge corporate website giants that own 500 plus websites for the sake of advertising revenue but everyone has their end game. Either way, most are in this as an end game to a means rather than a purest passion for the sake of doing what we do. This is the SINGLE LARGEST differentiating factor. PowerBoatNation wasn’t and isn’t designed to be like any of those entities. Sure we need to be self sustaining, but for the record I haven’t taken a dime nor has any other individual profited from PBN. We don’t have a board of directors and I don’t have to pay my rent or mortgage from any proceeds. ALL of any revenue earned has and will continue to go back into the build so we can bring you the best product possible. PBN was culminated in my head from the dialogue with other power boaters, I had a picture and it was a huge one but I knew I didn’t have the resources to make it all come together. I wanted a collaborative co-op where combined energy creates a positive result and our whole would in fact be greater than the sum of our parts. There was a missing piece and that piece was economics and IT support. Until this effort started I couldn’t have imagined just how many man hours goes into everything we work on to bring to the members.

As fate would have it my idea just happened to crash into a conversation with a close friend of mine Scott from Hardin Marine while they were scoping out a location for potential display in Destin FL at last year’s Emerald Coast Poker Run. You probably have heard and know of Hardin Marine, but what you may not know is they are an aggressive, flourishing, company that is more committed to this sport than anyone else I know. Scott has been a huge advocate of preservation of the sport and looking for ways to make sure it remains sustained for everyone. The conversation started with Scott and turned into a rant from him over a recent offer from the industries juggernaut website that had told him there was a limit to how many new products they would let them debut. He was extremely frustrated and started to explain to me from the marine industry side of things just how limited it was for them and their other friends in the industry to reach the consumer and provide them with new products as well as technical service data. He provided a interesting comparison to the automotive world and how things worked in the world of let’s say Hot Rod. Scott’s fear wasn’t about them as much as the smaller independent manufacture or repair facility that would never be able to afford where the industries marketing was heading.
I want to make sure I emphasize that Scott and the guys at Hardin Marine when we spoke weren’t talking to me about just their own products but their fear of where the industry was headed and the lack of investment being put back into the sport to sustain it. This is the same sentiment that I have always had, there are too many individuals and not enough collaborative support to really make success sustainable for generations; selfishness, and greed putting a stronghold on our collective future.

Keep in mind tough economic times abound and cash money is sacred, so I took the opportunity to give one of my best pitches ever and I pitched them on the idea of PowerBoatNation.Com. “What if we did this……..”, I said. At that Time I didn’t have the name Powerboat Nation wasn’t even in my mind and quite honestly the names I had……well we will just leave it at that and be thankful we were able to get the PBN name. Scott had numerous doubts and I don’t blame him, let’s look at this realistically, a number of people had made half hearted efforts at this with no avail. But he then turned the table and brought a host of idea’s, thoughts, advice, and most importantly a laundry list of things he didn’t want to see my dream become. At the end of the conversation he said it was simple you need to give the performance boating community what they want, not what you want. You need to be attentive to the Sport. So many people don’t or won’t support the events, you need to attend, participate, actually boat with boaters, and give back to them.

His requests seemed well pretty simple yet mountainous to consider. The proposition came about and rather than allow for all the continued speculations, rumors, and non truths, I thought it best to do a simple Q and A so Scott could tell it like it is.

PBN Brad: So Scott do you remember some of the things that lead you to lend so much effort and support to my building of PowerBoatNation.com?

Scott: Well if I recall It was timing I think more than anything. Our company had just been faced with a double whammy type of blow. We had numerous new products that we wanted to show the performance power boating community . We build more new individual performance marine products than nearly the industry combined. So letting the boating community know is a primary concern of ours. We had just received our latest advertising contract for what at the time was the industries leader. We had been told that they would not be able to run those product stories without an investment of nearly $750 to basically report online our press release. Which OK that could have been the cost of doing business but we were told it would be displayed in some off beaten part of the website that had yet to be developed? It felt like Hi-Jacking by the media. They had just provided us banner impression statistics that proved exactly what we thought. After showing our advertising banners to a couple of million viewers that literally only one percent ever opened them, yep that’s right 1 percent. There were other sites that ran like one new article here and there but there were always conflicts.

PBN Brad: So your interest to help me was primarily driven by your desire to bring products to market?

Scott: The bottom line is we are boaters and were very passionate of this sport. The problem is the people that were delivering the message weren’t passionate about it. It’s very difficult to build a collaboration when the other players aren’t committed to this for anything more than money. You have to be willing to be committed and not just involved and that’s a key statement. We had supported virtually every other website and had heard endless promises of advancement but only with limited success. So when I heard your idea and I was inspired, HOPE is what I really had, having watched you promote an entire offshore racing event with success I knew that you could do it but that it was a huge commitment on your part and that it would take more than just hard work it would take a substantial investment of support.

PBN Brad: So a few people have questioned how substantial your commitment is to PBN. They are shocked by it? I mean what’s really in it for you?

Scott: Honestly well when I you first asked for support I wasn’t sure what that meant. I knew you would need revenue to make the deal fly. But as I soon realized you were going to need much more. I was unsure but your infections positive attitude and goal is what I was really most inspired by. Its not too often in this arena that you find someone selflessly trying to do something good. I did some due diligence and finally got my head around what it would take I started my research it wasn’t a whim, I asked many of the industries companies and their founders if they felt they were getting what they wanted from the marine media. I got overwhelming response when I told them of your ideas.

To be completely transparent we even looked at trying to support another existing online community but couldn’t come to terms that made everyone happy as they didn’t want any corporate connection. They enjoyed being the “Stick it to the man” kind of group like rebels with a cause. We were even told that “Stupid Money” meaning BIG BIG money was the only way we could have gotten the efforts from other sites. In the end we figured if anyone needed stupid money it must have been you haha. In the end it really started to make sense that providing you support was the answer that would in turn provide and open new opportunity’s to this industry. Each site has its own vision and we respect that. But we also know the world wide web is a free roaming frontier free to all that want the journey. Which in the end is the best part of what your doing. We wouldn’t have made the leap alone but our confidence came when it was unanimous from all or your other advertisers that this is the future. We felt very strongly that consumers need a place that they could come for not only news, but new products, technical help, technical assistance, and more.

PBN Brad: Ok But WII-FM What’s in it for you?

Scott: There will always be numerous sites that pretend to be boating related but when the veil is pulled back they don’t even have a boat? They don’t attend the events? They merely report what happened and aren’t actually part of making the news. Ok so enough chatter what’s in it for us you ask? At the end of the day there is great satisfaction supporting someone like you and PBN’s goals because I know they are whats best for the sport and our customers. If we can be just one part of what supported the building of the industries best community while sharing products and new ideas then its all worth it. Making a positive impact on this sport is important to us.

PBN Brad: So it’s obvious a lone enthusiast like myself couldn’t have tackled this journey with out your initial efforts and those of the advertisers. But with those we are receiving amazing growth and our services and offerings are growing every month. What do you see when you look at PowerBoatNation now and where I’ve expressed were heading?

Scott: Well I don’t want your head to swell (haha) but I’m really proud of you and what your doing with PBN. I want and hope to see you bring even more as you have eluded to. I think your future ideas are awesome and I don’t see anyone else headed that direction and you are going to really separate PBN from other sites that offer a piece of what you do. But I have more confidence than ever in Powerboatnation. Honestly the best part of it all is that by just supporting PBN’s efforts and watching it grow you have elevated all of the rest of the industry. I mean its humorous and a success all at once. No longer can the other sites idle along on there laurels they have been forced to provide additional services as well. Hey you announce a magazine and they announce one. You provide a tech team and they are bringing a tech team. Now in the beginning I would have told you I didn’t think that was possible. But today I see almost every other website and performance marine media entity either copying some part of your format or all of the sudden working like I have never seen them work in the publishing industry in 15 years. So for the sake of Hardin Marine as a company and for the consumer as well as all of your other supporters of PBN it has had a two fold reward. The rest of the industry has awaken to the needs and desires of the Performance boating community and that’s a huge reward for all of us.

PBN Brad: So in other words would it be fair to say until we pushed the throttles wide open. That the other online formats were just pedaling along on cruise control and now they have to really get up and perform.

Scott: Absolutely. Competition is good for business and now everyone is awake and pushing. Which means your going to have to stay on the gas. But they still don’t have the same level of commitment you do. Most of their efforts are more about competition with you than focusing on the Power Boater. I mean really they may be crafty with a pen but In your case I don’t see any of the other guys showing up to dozens of poker runs and fixing a fellow boaters water pump and at the same time making sure the story gets captured and running a boat on the same run. But no matter what its all good for the sport so stay after it.

There You go guys. This is truly for everyone!

In a follow up conversation with BOOSTPOWER USA’s founder Alexi Sahagian from our recent interview with him, we got onto the subject of just how extreme or wild many situations this marine engine business can lead you into. I got him to pull away from his busy day at Boostpower Marine just to share some highlights of these most recent wild experiences with his customers around the globe. We’ll leave out the (Actual) names to protect the guilty or for that matter maybe ourselves!
Alexi’s first story involved a bullet-ridden offshore boat in South Florida:

“So I sold a pair of engines to a gentleman in Miami years prior”. He had asked me to come out and inspect the boat for some upgrades and repairs to the drives at his South Florida Mansion. When I arrived in Miami for the Miami International Boat Show, I figured I would go a bit early and assist in his request to repair and upgrade his boat as we would normally do.

I meet him at the mansion and while inspecting the boat, I could see that there were bullet holes through the side of the boat? I immediately asked him what happened. He stated that it was parked on the street and someone shot it up! I said, ok, so you want us to take this back to California and pull the motors, do fiberglass repairs, upgrade and freshen the motors etc. and bring it back? He stated “yes”! It was all weird and we had a hunch there was more to the story, but we thought-“It’s just another job for us and we can’t be concerned with outside measures!”

After Alexi shared this with us we said “Wow”! That would have been an eye opener to anyone, especially in South Florida, wouldn’t it? Alexi says these weird situations are not much of a surprise to him anymore as he went into another example of how the same type of stuff happens with his international customers abroad. As an interviewer, I know a bit about Alexi, and he seems to always be somewhat of a thick skinned, connected world traveler as he has family all over the globe. He exclaims his worldly heritage has made serving the customer base abroad almost natural for him and his diverse team.

Another Story Alexi Recalls involved a Russian Politican:

“I had a client involved with the Russian government. He was a highly influential political mogul in Russia. His vacation home was abroad in a beautiful location on the Adriatic Sea. A city called Split in the country of Croatia just south of Bosnia. For those that don’t know this, Croatia is truly a mecca of opulence for Europeans and especially Russians in the summer time.”

My customer had a very nice 47′ Fountain that had been outfitted with our Boostpower Marine engine packages. While he was in love with this boat, he had an extreme desire for speed and had a desire to send the engines here to the US for more power. Whether with his boats, cars, etc… His desire was to go fast! Although our meetings regarding the upgrades were awkward through translators from time to time, we made extreme efforts to get to know each other and had a great idea of what the customer’s goals and desires were with their performance boat. Alexi states “We are committed to those performance desires in every language”! There was in fact a difficult language barrier even though I speak more than English. So much of our communication came through a translator team in which we meet in person and on Skype calls throughout the relationship. His translator was living here in the USA and the translator was asked to continually deliver progress reports so we had a lot of communication that allowed us to build quite a relationship. From a customer experience, it was amazing I would receive the best Vodka money can buy as weekly gifts. It was amazing as we had built quite a close customer/friend relationship although most of it was all done through the Russian translators over a period of time.

We were approaching completion of his most recent request to freshen and upgrade his engine packages. It was all around a deadline, as time was of the essence in this type of deal due to the short boating season they had to enjoy the Boostpower Engines in their offshore boat. His engines were shipped back to Boostpower Marine in California via overnight airfreight for the rebuild/upgrades.

Upon delivery of the engines to Croatia, I was asked to oversee and manage the Croatian mechanics there locally who would install the engines in his boat, test it and go to run the boat in the Adriatic Sea following my lead.

Upon completion, we were to go to his private Island to celebrate the accomplishments, or should I say His dream to own the ultimate twin supercharged Fountain in all of Europe! (Even Faster Now)

All the tickets for travel for me and one of my staff to London were paid for and we were set to go meet the engines at the destination shop. His private Leer jet was picking us up in London to fly to Frankfurt Germany- refuel and pick up another European mechanic, then head over to Croatia to complete the job. This type of arrangement was not necessarily new to me as we have done these types of deals for 20 plus years.

About a week before we were set to go, the translator and his wife came to our shop shaking. Startled, I approached and asked what was wrong? They stated in tears that the Russian owner had died! We said what? They said he had drowned swimming. We asked: How can that be, he is an avid swimmer? They replied: That’s all they know! We were all devastated here at Boostpower Marine. We felt so close to him and his colleagues even though we had only built this relationship through texts, translators and body language in present.

Nothing felt right and of course wouldn’t you know that he was due to pay the balance of the bill however we had yet to receive the funds. Through more of my own investigation, I found out that it was a murder investigation. At this point all I could think was we were about to possibly go into harms way just because of my desire to deliver this customer his dream engines. I was both thankful and saddened at the same time as we were due there a week prior.

We never heard a thing for several months thereafter and just left the pallets shrink wrapped in the US. Here we had the customers engines, transmissions etc, yet no contact or of course payment. I told the guys to store them upstairs and wait for some contact. I stated that eventually someone will pop up. Sure enough, just recently, a random email came through from someone trying to claim the big hp motors. Of course it was a mysterious claimant! After researching we found out it was someone just trying to claim $300k worth of engines and drives knowing of the situation in Russia. What a scam!

Soon thereafter, the wife of the deceased contacted us and decided to continue the project as her husband wanted it and really loved the passion that myself and my staff had for his project. She stated that he had a love for what we do and really had a bond through a simple text/translator/body-language relationship. I was touched as it was a crazy journey over the years. Meanwhile, we are now fixing to ship and finish the boat abroad again.

It just proved what a new world and modern era we live in. This whole translation I don’t suppose could have happened as recent as ten years ago. Modern technology is changing the way we do business around the world. To have a relationship so close through text, email and translation. The bottom line is people are people, some are shady, some are not, however if you know how to handle them, a positive relationship can become from anything! We will miss him very much and the emotions of loss are UN explainable.

When we travel this time, there will be armed Militants with us at all times.

TICKFAW 200, 200 MILES, 200 BOATS, 2000 PEOPLE

24 Years ago Charlie AKA “Crazy Charlie” began a tradition that has grown and grown and is now one of the most talked about and attended powerboating events in the country.

Today, I talked with Casey Harrison, Casey is the Vice President of the Tickfaw 200 and he told me that after the passing of Charlie he helped keep the event going and raised the awareness to take it to the next level.

This year even with some chilly weather to start, “we definitely had the best year ever” according to Casey. “We sold 263 card hands, with at least 200 boats, and were able to raise $15K for the local water patrol. Everything went smooth and it was a great time.”

The Tickfaw 200 is certainly Louisiana’s Premiere Power Boat Poker Run. It is a two day event. Based out of the Blood River Landing, a private marina area with the Fun House bar that only opens to the public for this event every year. Tickfaw 200 | Blood River Marina

I had friends who attended tell me there were as many as 2000 people at the fun house with at least 40 Motor homes and more Cigarettes rafted together in one spot than they had ever seen before.

With over 200 miles of running and a couple thousand people attending this is an event that I will not miss next year. I have never been and I need to fix that.

A big hand to Casey, his crew and everyone else who has kept the dream alive for Crazy Charlie and everyone else who loves the life.

Pilot Glen Wilson and “Toxic Rocket” owner Joe Cassidy along with the entire dedicated crew were very satisfied with the boats performance at this weekends race. The race weekend turned out to be a long and at times difficult process. Heavy winds caused delays, competitors hit the timing lights, and some spectacular crashes slowed the process down considerably. But the hard work of the Lucas Oil Race Course Crew made it all work. Glen had to wait for wind during qualifying and lost the warm up temperature which is vital to get the best performance out of the engine. When he fired he left good but the motor kicked the blower belt and Glen had to shut it down. The run did get them qualified and they were able to meet Problem Child in Round one driven by Daryl Ehrlich.

The Toxic rocket had probably it’s best pass on the new hull turning in a 3.922 ET @ 213.736 MPH, Daryl ran a better 3.823 ET @ 260.236 which also gave him a “leg” on the Miles per hour world record. “Currently held by Problem Child ” at 258.264 MPH” set August 2011 at the Marble Falls, Lakefest”. Although they lost the round, the team was very excited that all the hard work so far including the testing at Lake Ming has payed off, delivering them the sub 4 second pass. They were given the opportunity to run an exhibition pass since it is vital to have the Lucas oil safety crew on site whenever they run. The exhibition pass proved they have worked out the launch issues and even though they had a cylinder out from the hit Glen ran a monster pass of 3.845 ET @ 223.547 MPH. This confirmed that the Toxic Rocket is here to be a top contender this season.]

Problem Child defeated Hot licks driven by Kevin Burgess in round two and went on to take the win against Tequila Sunrise driven by Bryan Sanders.

BBLADES Offers Bravo Drive Spacers and Exclusive Test Program

“Dial–in” drive height affordably with the marine industry’s ONLY spacer demo deal!

Performance boaters with Bravo or Bravo SportMaster drives can now dial-in their boats’ optimum performance, affordably, with BBLADES Professional Propellers’ new Bravo Drive Spacers Plates and Bravo Sport Master Drive Spacer Plate Test Program. Spacer plates allow boaters to change the depth of the propeller in the water-often called the “X” dimension. Lowering the “X” dimension can improve a boats attitude and handling while raising it will generally increase speed. Spacer plates lower a gearcase without having to change the drive height on the boat, improving overall performance, decreasing prop slip percentage, reducing “time-to-plane,” and increasing bow lift.

BBLADES now carries a line of spacer plates for Bravo and Bravo SportMaster drives offered in 1-, 1.5-, and 2- inch varieties that can be tested for 15-days at a cost of $100 per plate. A deposit of $500 is required, but both the deposit and test fee are applied to the purchase price if the spacer plate delivers the desired results. If further testing is required, test plates can be traded for an additional test fee until the correct depth is determined. Customers are responsible for the shipping costs in both directions, a modest late fee if the test period time is exceeded, and for any damage to the plates. In addition, Bravo Drive and Bravo Sport Master Drive Spacer Plates are available for purchase in 1-, 1.5-, 2-, 2.5- and 3- inch varieties.

The new program is an extension of a BBLADES’ test program for its own brand of #6 Drive Spacer Plates for SSM VI-Drives. BBLADES is the only manufacturer of #6-Drive Spacer Plates available in quarter-inch increments from ¼-inch to 3-inches available for testing under the similar terms. All other manufacturers make spacer plates in half-inch increments. BBLADES also offers riggers a complete line of #6-Driver Stud Spacers.

At one time, racers and serious performance boaters could go to a manufacturer’s test facilities and experiment with drive heights until they discovered what worked best. “With testing facilities like Lake X closed, riggers are left without options,” says BBLADES co-founder Brett Anderson. “Our spacer plate test programs provide some flexibility for dialing in a boat and will save them some money as well.”

BBLADES also offers serious boaters a chance to “try before you buy” with its Propeller Test Program and its exclusive #6 Offshore Cleaver Test Program.

Interested boaters can learn more about the various test programs, receive free consultations services, and reserve test dates by contacting BBLADES at 920-295-4435. Information about all of BBLADES’ products and services is available on-line at Boat Propellers – Lab Finishing, Mercury, Hering Propellers and More!, where most BBLADES products may be purchased direct.

When he traveled to his first poker run Myles Holcomb knew the experience was one he had to share with all his friends and just had to bring the same type of event closer to Biloxi, Mississippi. Teaming with Smokin the Sound’s Rusty David and Woody Bailey, Holcomb with the help of long time poker runner Paul Burttucci has done just that with the “Smokin the Sound Poker Run” Now highly anticipated annual event among participants and spectators alike. Taking 5 (maybe ten) with the West Coasts Premier Engine Builder BOOSTPOWER USA. Owner Alexi Sahagian answers our questions:

PBN: For those that have either been in hiding or have never seen one of your glossy full color advertisements in every Performance boating magazine over the last twenty years can you give us some insight into what makes BOOSTPOWER USA so unique and so resilient that you have not only just weathered the storms you are prospering and coming out with new products?

Alexi: BOOSTPOWER has been around for over 25 Years now, so we area healthy and strong company. What has kept us there is innovation and investment into technology so that we have always been at the forefront of what the customer wanted. We have been EFI Specialist for a long time. Long before other engine builders around even considered it. I mean most West Coast engine builders aren’t even doing their own tuning. They rely on the supercharger manufacture to provide them some conservative pre-programmed tuning which shorted their prospective client by quite a few horsepower. We have a reputation with our clients when you buy our power or services you always stay with us as no one near us delivers this level of service.

PBN: So what exactly does that mean? I mean hasn’t the whole CARB emissions deal wreaked Havoc on your guys?

Alexi: We are not like most others, we have all of our data in house where most others sub out their data in which this allows us to spend more time finding more reliable legal horsepower without being rushed off a machine. All of our engine families are simply awaiting completion of manuals for final certification. We are glad we waited as the rules changed several times throughout the process.

PBN: You were involved in engines, EFI, and turbo engines long before the current rage. How much did having all of that experience play into your current efforts and offerings?.

Alexi: I was mentored by my father mostly and my drive to learn electronics. His racing inspiration got me excited. I started to tinker as a child with my father it was ingrained in my blood from there on! I started outbuilding and tuning Automotive drag race application’s but my love for boats brought me to where we are today. I have never been happy with just production parts that I knew could be improved. So we bought and built a state-of-the-art Dyno tuning lab. What came next was an understanding of the components and that has given us an edge.

PBN: So what kind of edge? What do you see Boost Power as being recognized for?

Alexi: Ultra custom big power plants and EFI sophistication and services! We don’t just build engines were capable of complete rigging from Engines, Transmission and Drive train related operations, partial, complete or full on custom builds.

PBN: So basically you’re a kind of one stop shop type facility for performance boat services?

Alexi: Well that’s a little broad probably but when a customer is seeking unique or exotic it seems they end up at us. We enjoy helping a customer build his dream. But there are a lot of customers around the world that we also support with hard to find specialty parts. From our B2 Product Line. This consists of our EFI systems and Supercharger systems made in house in our facility here in Newbury Park CA facility.

PBN: Recently there seems to be scuttlebutt about the fact you’re bringing staggering horsepower to the marine industry. We’ve noted on the forums some “Unicorn” type references by the nay-sayers that have left the industry in disbelief of this kind of power you’re churning out. Where and how did you evolve to these levels, what is the most power you’ve developed?

Alexi: Well for development –merely- and testing to create baseline horsepower ranges for our new 800 cube engine series. We used some knowledge from a few Top Fuel Engines that we have done , the most Horsepower on any endurance package is really in the 3000hp range. It has become common to go over 2000 these days,

PBN: As an avid boater and a guy that has spent time behind the wheel in virtually every aspect of form of boating, boat racing, stunt work, and Magazine test driver . What boat do you find your most personal pleasure in?

Alexi: Don’t get me wrong a 200+ mph pass in a 40′ Offshore catamaran is a thrill but I love my 21′ Schiada. Its like a Lamborghini on the water. Great handling of big power and tons of fun to drive. I love 100 mph 90 degree turns-ski race style! I also love the big boats, however way more adrenaline in the little ones!

PBN: So your corporate headquarters are based in Sunny California, but we’ve seen your power in boats coast to coast. Is your primary business West Coast or East Coast based?

Alexi: There are a lot of name brand builders that support the domestic USA, But our business model is much more world wide. We ship and perform services around the world. In fact, we export over 70% of all engines, drives and powertrains. Many have told me I am crazy to go overseas to the depths. But my response is my entire family is from abroad, therefore it is normal for me to travel and support our products worldwide. I travel to Kuwait, Southern Russia, Croatia, Dubai, Malta, UAE etc. and feel safe there, I enjoy it and it allows us to serve some of the world’s most Elite and wealthy customers. Our business really knows no geographic boundary.

Here’s to a fabulous 2013 boating season and thanks again for joining us to support our commitment to build you the ultimate boating web destination.

Last October I participated in Poker Runs America Season Finale in St Petersburg, Fl and there was one particular boat that caught my eye and my attention. It was a Donzi ZR Comp with a particular thump that was just a little different. We ran together for most of the ocean part of the poker run and it was a great day. (Well, except for the holes in my pistons but that’s another story). Then this year after we launched PBN I was back in Tampa Bay for the Poker Runs America Season Opener. I was upside down in a 46 Outerlimits replacing a water pump impeller for a boating friend and I thought I recognized the same boat again and when I popped my head up and looked out sure enough part of the Jersey Crew was back boating in Florida. I was impressed with the boat and with seeing Tom again so I asked if he wouldn’t mind sharing his story. Because he is not just another boater he is a PowerBoating Enthusiast!

Tom Anselmi from Green Village New Jersey runs a 2003 Donzi 38 ZR Competition,Potter Performance Engines built up his Modified Mercury 575’s. The heads were Polished and Ported, and they were converted to Roller Cams. The Weiand Superchargers that were added have an upgraded and modified fuel injection system making 700 HP with 700 foot pounds of torque pushing the boat to just over 110 MPH through IMCO Drives.

PBN: Who rigged your boat?

I purchased the boat in 2007 directly from Donzi with help from my friends Bob Christie and Frank Civitano. The boat just had a “2007”update done by Donzi including a carbon fiber dash, new gauges and new ¼ canopies. This winter, Potter Performance just did a full refresh of the exterior (wet sand and polish), re rigged some of the boat with new sea strainers, electrical updates, new canvas, LED lighting, and a new logo for the engine hatch. The trailer got a full rebuild as well. Everything looks better than new!

PBN: Tell us about your crew?

I could not have this lifestyle if it weren’t for my awesome crew. First is my wife Andrea. I knew she was a keeper when, after dating me for only two months, she went on her first poker run only for me to blow a motor and have to idle 4 hours in to Atlantic City. At the time, I did not have a porta-potty on the boat and we were in 3-5 footers with no swim platform. Needless to say it was a sprint to the bathroom when we got there. My right hand man is my friend Pete. He is like the little brother I never had and he is always there for me.Last but not least is my “family” the Jersey Crew. I am truly blessed to have made such amazing friends through this sport!

PBN: What are your future plans?

Eventually I would like to freshen up the interior and maybe breakup all the red with some contrasting seat inserts. I would also like to upgrade the stereo, dress up the engine bay with flooring and a tool box, and maybe add some more accent lighting to the cockpit.Other than that I like the traditional look of the boat. I get quite a lot of comments about how it actually stands out because it is simple and timeless.

PBN: What was the trigger or first impression that made you a Powerboating enthusiast?

My father built a summer house on Barnegat Bay in 1979. I was seven years old and instantly fell in love with the water. My mom used to take me with some family friends to see the Benihana Offshore Race every year and I loved it. Shortly thereafter I remember seeing a local race boat “Kamikaze” running all the time by our house. I was hooked. I got my first boat (a 13’ Boston Whaler) when I turned 13 and have been boating ever since. When I turned 18, I met the owner of “Kamikaze” and spent my college summers working on the boat. After I graduated college I bought my own go-fast in 1996, a 1983 22’ Donzi Classic. I spent a lot of time restoring and running that boat. I sold it in 2002 and upgraded to a brand new 2003 29’ Kryptonite and then sold that 4 years later to get my 38 Donzi. Checkout the cake!
