Jay Marshall, the 61 year old driver from Baton Rouge, LA crashed during a vintage power boat exhibition run a the APBA Gold Cup in Detroit. The accident occured just after 2:30 p.m. in the Roostertail Turn. The boat flipped, and Marshall was thrown out of the craft.

He was promptly rescued and taken on a stretcher to the race medical center near the pit tower. Marshall appeared to be ok and waved to the crowd shore following the wreck. It is reported he has only suffered scrapes and bruises and was to be transferred to Detroit Receiving Hospital.

His boat, a 5.0-liter vintage boat named “Tijuana Taxi” was heavily damaged in the crash.

Last year during very choppy conditions, three boats blew over in spectacular fashion. Although conditions for this years event seem to be much better, drivers still need to be careful as today’s accident shows.

We will update as more details become available.

If you were a Captain for marine towing services such as BoatUS or Sea Tow International, you likely had a busy weekend over the holiday. Sea Tow’s National dispatch center reported record high numbers of calls for assistance from stranded boaters over the the five day period for July 3-7, up 12% from 2012. “This July 4th holiday weekend was the busiest we’ve seen since I founded Sea Tow back in 1983,” said Capt. Joe Frohnhoefer, Sea Tow Founder and CEO.

Frohnhoefer praised his staff claiming “Across the country, our U.S. Coast Guard-licensed Sea Tow Captains and crew demonstrated their high level of professionalism and skill by responding quickly when needed and helping Sea Tow members and other boaters stay safe on the water. Our yellow Sea Tow boats helped make the 4th of July truly red, white and blue.”

Most of the calls for assistance were for getting a tow in after engine or drive failures. Sea Tow believes the extended 4th weekend was responsible for more boats on the water than in previous years. A number of unprepared boaters called for on-the-water fuel deliveries after running the tanks dry. Jump starts and un-groundings came in at 3rd and 4th place respectively.

One thing thats changed in recent years in the ability to make calls for assistance from cell phones as coverage now extends to many boating areas. Sea Tow itself has a unique app for iPhone and Android users that will call for help with the single swipe of a finger and relay your GPS coordinates to Sea Tow’s Dispatch Center. The days of waving down a passing boat for assistance may be numbered.

It was a busy spring for BBLADES sponsored anglers and racers who hooked-up to win some prestige events around the country.

BBLADES Bass Pro Matt Nogalski teamed-up with his brother-in-law Justin Kohn to win the 35 annual Mercury National Walleye Tournament on Lake Winnebago (WI). The pair weighed 10 fish over two days for a hefty 49.64 pounds and a $13,000 first place check. Matt and Justin led 298 other teams after day one with a five fish limit that tipped the scales at just over 25.5 pounds. Ironically, the team was randomly assigned boat #1 prior to the start of the event!

Go Fast, Turn Left

Congratulations to Johnny & Jason Saris on winning the Offshore Powerboat Association (OPA) Class 400 checkered flag during the Atlantic City Festival of Speed Offshore Grand Prix. The win was especially sweet, because team Saris Racing Engines spent the final days rigging a new 33 PowerPlay with staggered twin 650s, finishing with just enough time to get to AC for the race, but not enough time to test. “It was a little sketchy at first,” Johnny said, “but when the green flag dropped, adrenaline took over and everything was fine.” Saris said he was confident in his equipment; boat motors and props. “We’ve worked with Brett for a long time and have always had amazing results. There is no other option for us, BBLADES is the best.”

An eye on the Walleye guy

Keep an eye on BBLADES favorite walleye angler, Korey Sprengel, who is poised to have his best season in 7 years as a pro. As of this writing, the 25 year old from Beaver Dam, Wisconsin is second in the point standings of the National Walleye Tour (NWT) and sitting in the top three of the Masters Walleye Circuit (MWC). His goal is to win Angler of the Year, and the title is well within reach.

Korey, who won the 2012 FLW Tour Event at Bay de Noz, says his success is all about experience and the confidence that comes with it. Specifically, “learning how to break-down a body of water quickly so I can find areas similar to those that are producing fish; sometimes you have to make a ‘milk run’ but areas with less fishing pressure often have better quality fish.”

He makes those runs in a Ranger 620, pushed by a 250 h.p. Mercury, propped with a Bravo 1 OB from BBLADES, “and I have a Tempest for really rough conditions.” Sprengel explains that anglers don’t change props like racers do, “A lot of guys don’t, but there are more guys that should.” He credits BBLADES with offering up that type of knowledge. “I thought I knew a lot about props, but Brett has taught me so much. BBLADES has great people; super friendly, always willing to answer questions and then follow up to make sure everything is working as expected.”

A Family Affair

Jake Anderson, his best friend Bryce Smith and Jake’s dad, Brett Anderson (President of BBLADES Propellers), celebrated Father’s Day in a big “weigh.” The trio won the Angler & Youth Angler Norton’s Dry Dock Tournament held at Big Green Lake (WI). Sponsored by Lund Boats, AYA is designed to introduce young people to competitive fishing working with a mentor. Five Smallmouth Bass totaling 17.34 pounds was enough to best 49 other teams. The boys won an expense-paid trip to compete in the International Championship Tournament to be held at Kenora, Ontario, Canada in August. They also won a 10’ Lund Boat, 5HP Merc Motor and Trailer. By the way the boys won the tournament running a 24 pitch BLASTER propeller.

Follow the progress of these intrepid competitors on the BBLADES Facebook page.

Well known offshore powerboat racer Ryan Beckley told us the Race Day on Sunday was a “Chamber of Commerce Day”. Ryan lauded the event: “After a lot of rain, Sunday’s final was perfect. Thousands of fans lined the beach and it was great racing. The parade brought out thousands despite the rain and the street party was packed”.

Local press has estimated the crowd on the beach to over 50,000 spectators. For 29 years this Sarasota Race has been something no one wants to miss. A great venue in a great city with great fans, it is a natural formula for success. Earlier this year there was great doubt and dread that the municipal sponsorship would not come through and many thought the race wouldn’t happen. With great effort from Ryan and other race supporters the funding was obtained and thanks to the success and perfect formula of the weekend, both the Mayor and City Manager pledged onstage at the awards ceremony the race would continue on for at least another 29 years.

Travis Lofland, whom many of you probably already know, moved from the Time Bandit and is now the wheelman in the SuperBoat Extreme “Instigator” The 40’ Fountain with Peter Meyer on throttles. Travis told me he was stoked to be able to take the win but wished Lucas Oil and Twisted Metal didn’t suffer some engine problems as he really wanted to race with them right next to him. “Other than that the weekend and the race was fantastic” said Travis.

While Key West will likely always reign king for offshore race venues, Sarasota has a very unique and vibrant appeal it ranks as my favorite race site.

BAM MARINE EXPANDS TO ADD A FULL LINE OF MERCURY OUTBOARDS! At Powerboat Nation we’re always excited when we see anyone let alone one of our supporters making such a huge commitment to the sport. You see in most recent years the trend it seems by the manufacturer has been based around downsizing making product availability scarce and troublesome for boaters. There are few people in this industry during the economic challenges that have committed for the long haul like BAM Marine has. So for a dealer to expand into to handle the full line of Mercury Outboards that’s a big investment into their companies future. BAM Marine has long been known and respected as one of the largest dealers of genuine Mercury & Mercruiser parts in the country but we were surprised and excited at this move and wanted to sit down with them and figure out the move behind all of this and had a quick Q and A with Marc at BAM…

PBN Asks: What inspired you to make this serious investment at this time into the full line of Mercury outboards?

Marc: We are known as the Mercury Parts leader around the country so the next step was just the evolution of our business. This cements our status as a Full line Mercury Platinum Dealer and as such are in the best position to fill the needs of ours and Mercury’s customers

PBN Asks: How long has BAM been servicing the marine industry?

Marc: BAM has been in business since 1977, Located downtown on the Chicago River we were the place in Chicago for storage, fuel, service and repairs. Buried in the basement of the landmark Marina City twin towers BAM had a really well equipped repair facility. In addition to basic repairs BAM did drives, rigging, fiberglass, paint and had a complete engine and machine shop with a dyno!

In 1995 BAM’s decided that Florida would be the new home of BAM Marine. In addition to the development of the Cyborg transmissions since then BAM has also become one of the largest dealers of genuine Mercury Marine parts in the country. In a reversal of roles, BAM also became the supplier to Mercury Racing for the transmissions used on the 850 & 1075’s.

PBN Asks: So when someone asks you just what exactly is “BAM Marine”, how do you explain your business?

Marc: BAM is one of the largest and most experienced Mercury dealers in the country. We have an enormous inventory, and what many people may not know is we are a fully equipped shop and certified technicians to perform service and warranty on all Mercury & Mercruiser engine and drives.

PBN Asks: What makes BAM Marine so unique and why is South Florida your choice to call home for your company?

Marc: Actually I don’t think there are a whole lot of similar companies. There are very few that have been in business this long and even fewer that have the inventory and in-house capabilities we do. Because of our manufacturing we have tools and machines that most in our business don’t have. If we need a special component, welding or machining for a job we can do it in house. We grew up with our focus on hi-performance but today we sell and service pretty much everything. But that our experience gives us a better perspective than most. We have always sold Mercury outboard parts and Mercruiser engines, but now that we are also selling complete Mercury Outboards we are in an even better position to service our customers and local boaters.

South Florida is a great place for us to be. In addition to personally loving the climate down here boating and the marine industry in general are a major part of the local economy. And for the most part the boating is year round! When I was in Chicago we had at most a 14 week season!

PBN Asks: How has Mercury’s outboard line evolved in recent years?

Marc: When I started in this business outboards were noisy, smelly & temperamental. Not something that you would ever consider for a luxury boat. Today is the exact opposite. The engines are quiet, powerful & reliable. And the electronics have made them more user friendly than ever.

PBN Asks: What does it mean to be a Platinum dealer? I always hear this expression touted, but even I don’t have a full comprehension of what it exactly means?

Marc: Mercury Platinum is reserved for dealers that have made a substantial commitment and investment to sell & service Mercury products. A Platinum dealer has to have certified mechanics, all the special tools and computer software and purchase over $150,000 annually from Mercury.

BAM is not just parts and transmissions. BAM is ingenuity, machining, service, warranty and now outboards. Marc has a wealth of information and knowledge and all you have to do is ask the question to get the information we all need.

I originally wrote this for Sport Boat. Here it is again with the original title and some edits/back and forth:

NIGHT RIDES: Develop Your Own Night Vision

Miami at Night

Even when I was very young I enjoyed being on the water at night. I absolutely love running at night and running great distance at night over the open ocean in small boats is something that to me is absolutely thrilling. I have been lucky enough to be involved in circumstances that allowed for this. I will always remember running in a 42 Fountain with 502 MPI’s on Bravos way south of the border and coming into San Diego just as the sun was coming up. Big Pacific seas in total darkness for hours, thrilling times.

Independence Day remains my favorite holiday. It stems from watching fireworks from our family’s cruiser on the lake. Since those early years, I have logged thousands of hours underway at night. In the hunt for drug and illegal-alien traffickers, I’ve run large vessels, including Coast Guard Cutters with suites of electronic navigation gear, as well as small, fast hulls with no navigation gear, in the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico. When I lived in Puerto Rico, we ran as often as we could to the U.S. and British Virgin Islands in our Donzi center console. Time on the other islands was precious to me, so leaving early and getting home late was the order of the weekend getaway. And that meant running at night, because night rides gave us much more island time.

Night boating can be fun, safe, and rewarding, but like anything else some tools and some training can help.

But first, a couple of basics that should be obvious, but too often are ignored:

• Don’t Drink and Boat: If you consume or intend to consume any alcohol or any other substances, leave the boat docked. Night operation brings a variety of stressors that are amplified by alcohol and drugs. There is an absolute zero tolerance for consumption of anything hat may alter your ability to function at less than your maximum ability.

• Don’t Navigate “Blindly:” If you’re unfamiliar with the area or with night operation, don’t go or limit your time underway. The most essential tool you need for night operation is the ability to develop your own night vision. Your eyes are your best aid in night operation. You must adjust to the dark and allow your eyes to be able to see at night. The only way to do this is to make your surroundings as dark as possible. You have to make sure your navigation lights are set properly and fitted with shields to prevent light from spilling back to you. All other lights should be off. I have seen boaters use “spot lighting” while underway. For your safety and the safety of other night boaters, do not use this method. Not only are you destroying your night vision but you also can destroy the other boat operators’ night vision. If you do see a light or have to look at a white light, try to look side to side and not directly at the light. We always have red-lens flashlights to illuminate charts or anything else we need to view while underway at night, because the red light does not kill your night vision. At night on the trailer or dock, set up all your navigation lights. Ideally you will have a forward mast light, sidelights, and a stern light. The forward mast light, with a 225-degree arc of visibility, should be a high centerline, at least 1 meter above the sidelights, forward of the operator and shielded so light does not spill into your eyes. Boats less than 12meters are allowed to have one all-around white light in lieu of the mast and sternlight. Ensure you can manage your cockpit lights, cabin lights, stereo lights, and instrument lights. While your gauge panel may not have a dimmer switch, your GPS display most certainly does and you need to know how range or depth perception can be compromised. The ability to see relevant objects at greater ranges and take early action to avoid collision can be compromised. The ability for the night vision tools to see is often based upon the availability of ambient light. Even with infrared capabilities, this type of equipment is best suited for well-trained personnel who are using them for specific purposes and usually in a very close engaging situation.

In general, slower is better at night. Keep in mind that we do have a speed limit on all waters. Rule No. 6 of the inland/international COLREGS tells us we must maintain safe speed for the given conditions. Regardless of what we might think, this is a speed limit. Rather than nailing down a prescriptive rule to where simple-minded government legislatures and the uninformed public feel comfortable, this rule allows everyone in the powerboat world to think and use their experience and skill to determine the safe speed for any condition, day or night. At night, safe speed for you may be clutch ahead and safe speed for others maybe minimum planning speed. This is for you to determine; weather conditions, other boats, background lights, and everything else must be taken in consideration when determining safe speed. You should never lose sight forward of your bow, and this includes coming on and off plane. If you do lose sight foreword you need to learn how to drive or set up your boat so you do not. Finally, before you head out check to be sure you have the correct navigational lights for your boat. Know how to read and manage your gauge panel and GPS and where to find the dimmer on your GPS. If you are prepared and knowledgeable about your boat and practice safety at all times, you will have a great time.

Oh, and one more thing: Don’t let next July 4 be your first night on the water. That’s one of the busiest boating nights of the year. Practice night operation on slow nights where there is little or no boat traffic. That will continue to build your knowledge, awareness, and confidence. Have fun and stay safe.

Super Boats Headed To Sarasota Florida For Big Summer Race
Offshore Racing Is Expecting Big Crowds For Fourth Of July Weekend

Key West, Fl – Professional offshore race teams are preparing for one of the biggest events of the year. July 5th through the 8th, teams will compete in the 29th Annual Suncoast Super Boat Grand Prix Festival in Sarasota, Florida. Super Boat International (SBI) is the largest professional offshore racing sanctioning body in America, producing eight events through the year which attracts hundreds of thousands of fans and spectators to beachfront cities.

The Suncoast Grand Prix is one of the largest offshore powerboat races of the year which brings race teams from all around the United States and abroad. Racers travel from as far away as the Middle East and Europe to compete in SBI events. For this race event, some of the most exciting and competitive racing action takes place just offshore from the beaches of Lido Beach, Florida.

“The Sarasota race is always a very good race for us. The community really gets behind this event. The excitement starts the weekend before with various activities and continues to build throughout the week until the boats come for race weekend. When the boats arrive at Centennial Park which is just off 41st street, you can watch the excitement and the crowds build over the three days”, comments John Carbonell, President of Super Boat International. “The fans look forward to seeing the boats up close as the dry pits get really crowded in anticipation of the races on Sunday.” Thousands enjoy the food and activities as they watch the fastest boats in the world get craned in the water for testing.

Fans can expect some very exciting racing from every Super Boat class of boats. The Manufacturer Production and Vee bottom boats are typically the most recognizable boats that every day boaters, which consists over 70 million Americans, would see on a given weekend. The Super Stock outboard boats are a catamaran style with twin outboard engines. The biggest and fastest boats are the large 40’ – 50’ catamaran powerboats that have up to 3000 horsepower from a combined two engines. These Super Cat style boats have some of the most unique paint schemes and are often the fan favorites. These are the world’s fastest offshore boats which can reach speeds upwards of 200 mph.

Last year’s 28th Annual event left many lasting impressions. If it wasn’t a record crowd for the downtown parade, it was surely close. The streets were packed for blocks and it was 10 and 20 people deep in many points along the parade route. The parade consisted of the local fire and police boats along with the world’s best race boats. Also, Tropical Storm Debbie had come ashore a month earlier and displaced much of Lido Beach. So with some of the sand moved around, the beach was packed on race day Sunday with fans covering almost every square acre of beach. It appeared to be the largest crowd for any previous race.

Our Sunday races will be streamed on https://new.livestream.com/sbi/sarasota2013 so you won’t miss any of the action… if you can’t make it to the beaches. Of if you’re on the beach, you can watch and listen to it on your smartphone or tablet. On the Livestream page, listen to the race, see the interviews, chat live and watch all the action as it happens. Fans can stay connected with us at superboat.com and Like Us on Facebook for all this year’s news. The Super Boat schedule is posted through 2013 and 2014 with races coming up in Michigan City IN; New York, NY; Clearwater and Key West, FL.

FastBoats Marine Group Gets Set to Promote Safe Boating During 4th of July Week

FastBoats Marine Group owner Randy Sweers is teaming up with Premier Beverage http://www.charmer-sunbelt.com/premi…s/Welcome.aspx CEO Bob Drinon during Fourth of July week to promote safe and responsible boating.

A total of 257 public service announcements will run on 4 different local radio stations throughout the week. They will be talking about the effects and dangers of drinking and boating. Make sure to listen in during the week of the 4th, on WQAM 560 AM, WBGG 105.9, WMXJ 102.7, and WKIS 99.9.

FastBoats will also be displaying “BOAT SMART FROM THE START” banners at Lighthouse Point Marina and the Nauti Dawg Cafe at Mile Marker 69 in Lighthouse Point, FL along with handing out promotional items to boaters and patrons throughout the week. Make sure to stop by and see us!

Randy’s wife Kim Sweers serves on the board of many of theses charities with Bob and is a powerhouse in the local community. Boo was the guy behind the original Drambuie on Ice race boat back in the day and has long been a supporter of boating safety efforts.

Fast Boats Marine Group has always been a strong supporter of Boating Safety Efforts and they jumped without hesitation when approached to help with the ad. Randy flew to New York where the PSA was taped as WABC Studios. “We got the announcement perfect on the first take” said Randy ” But just to act professional we did take two”

The PSA will be broadcast live during this weekends SBI Offshore Race in Sarasota

We are also now on the lookout for more collaborations between Premier Beverage and Fastboats Marine Group.

Powerboat Nation could not be happier than to welcome Autometer Marine. Autometer Marine was behind the founding of the industry’s first monster sized race marine instruments. A lot has changed since the introduction of the first marine gauge and Autometer Marine continues to lead the way in performance marine instrumentation. They offer complete packages for in both standard 2″ & 3-3/8″ and Monster 2-5/8″ & 5″ instruments in a an array of finishes including White, Platinum, Platinum/Chrome and Carbon Fiber finishes. Autometer Marine cut their teeth in the racing world and is without a doubt the preferred gauge used by race teams in their high performance machines and you don’t survive the grueling world of racing unless you are reliable and accurate.

Autometer Marine has been in development of an all new GPS Speedometer system for over two years. They didn’t want just a speedometer function they wanted to offer the marine industry a intelligent multi-function instrument with enough features to virtually obsolete other brands. When it came time to release this unit they looked to Powerboat Nation. They recognize our members are performance minded and appreciate top of the line performance accessories more than anywhere else.

Autometer used their years of competition gauge manufacturing to evaluate not only what was lacking in current GPS Speedometer technology but to also evaluate the signal and receiver so that they could reduce the cost making this technology more affordable to all boaters. Best of all the new gauge is loaded with exclusive features such as a digital display featuring an eight function menu. This menu provides Heading or Compass course, Peak Speed, Time of day, Trip meter, giving distance covered as well as a total distance odometer, location in Latitude and Longitude coordinates, Hour meter, and comes with variable brightness with (6) six levels of brightness adjustment.

So not only is Autometer upping the stakes in the world of GPS Speedometers they are doing it for a fraction of the money. The new unit uses a receiver that sells for less than $100 compared to other brands that sell theirs for well over $200. The complete gauge and receiver packages start at only $369.99, this new low cost receiver matched with a competition race proven design as well as an entire series of gauges to match should make Autometer your next choice in performance instruments

This last weekend brought another HUGE power boating extravaganza to the water. I just spoke to Chip Miller of Michigan Miller Marina – A Full service Marina located in St. Clair Shores on the Nautical Mile and of course he was slammed preparing Skaters to participate in SkaterFest that was hosted this last weekend by Ron Szolack who has owned/owns variety of fast powerboats many of them SKATERS.

The weekend at Lake St Clair also brought JOBBIE NOONER, JobbieCrew.com Everything Jobbie Nooner related | JobbieCrew.com and Welcome to Jobbienooner.com! If you don’t know or ever been, this powerboating event in my estimation is the single largest one of its kind event in the world. Thousands of boats were running around the lake and all congregated on a small island near the Canadian Border know as Gull Island.

Prior to the weekend Chip told me he had four Skaters at his marina more were coming and had heard twelve boats were confirmed but expected more. Skaterfest is unique to many other manufacturer regattas because it was initiated, supported, and run by the customers rather than the builder showing how strong the passion for the brand rally is.

Jobbie Nooner had nothing to do with SkaterFest but only addes to the adventure and excitement of the weekend on Lake St Clair. In the past over 1000 boats have been recorded rafted together. Chip told me guys will come to the marina the day of and want to buy cheap boats just to go to Gull Island, never owned a boat, never been in a boat, but they have to get to the party on the island.

If you read my boating while intoxicated article you can find the reference about he guy who despite having his boat at the bottom of the shipping channel only really cared about getting to the island with his Vodka Melon.

The history of Jobbie Nooner goes back to the early 1980’s and I encourage you all to read about it, and attend it, I have and it is worth the effort.
