Yearly Archives: 2019

Dave Magoo's new DCB M44, Bananas XL.

The 2019 edition of Desert Storm is finally here…and Wednesday night perfectly commemorated the iconic Lake Havasu poker run and shootout with the annual charity auction and welcome party held at Horizon Motorsports.

From 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., participants, manufacturers and industry luminaries (including Bob Teague of Teague Custom Marine and his family, Chris Camire of Lavey Craft Boats, Jeff Johnston and Tony Chiaramonte of DCB Performance Boats, Jake Fraleigh of Eliminator Boats, et al.) gathered to christen the 21st annual boat blowout. The Welcome Party and charity auction, which launched last year’s event, is part of the most recent evolution of the Desert Storm experience—especially for the organizers’ most long-running and loyal participants and sponsors.

Longtime DCB customer Dave Magoo was in attendance, as was his brand-new DCB M44, Bananas XL. Also attending: John “KAP” Caparell (owner of a unique 32′ Doug Wright catamaran) and Gary and Rosemary Colledge of Collegewood Marine.

Desert Storm continues on Thursday morning with the famous Street Party; Friday is the poker run, and Saturday brings the legendary shootout.

Kalamazoo, MI-based Bio-Kleen Products Inc., manufacturer of high-performance, biodegradable cleaning products, has rolled out a new product called Kleen Wash. It’s a concentrated cleaner for your exterior vehicle that produces gallons of wash soap from only a few ounces.

Kleen Wash has a high-foam action that helps to remove black streaks, dirt, grime, insects and water spots from your boat, RV or vehicle’s exterior. An incorporated polymer leaves behind a UV Blocker and SPF 40 for added protection and shine.

The product is available in a variety of sizes, including 32 ounces, 1 gallon, 5 gallons and 55 gallons.

Kleen Wash was designed with the detailing backroom in mind. As part of Bio-Kleen’s line of Dilution Solution products, Kleen Wash makes every dollar go further; requiring only a few ounces to make gallons of ready-to-use soap. This product has the same cleaning quality and environmentally safe attributes that Bio- Kleen has become known for.

The product also has no artificial fragrance added, and is biodegradable, non-toxic, non-aerosol and ozone safe. Bio-Kleen has produced American made, biodegradable cleaning products since 1987; guaranteed to outperform leading brands and help maintain a clean, healthy and sustainable lifestyle.

Bio-Kleen tours the country with its own Bio-Kleen Boat, a 1993 35’ Cigarette Café Racer, which is used in charity poker run events throughout the year. The company typically teams up with organizations like the Make-a-Wish Foundation, GIGI’s Playhouse and Wounded Warriors.

In addition to RV & Marine cleaners, Bio-Kleen makes environmentally friendly cleaning products for the snowmobile, motorcycle, automotive, janitorial and commercial markets, allowing them to service nearly any cleaning application.

As reported in Powerboat Nation last month, World Champion offshore driver/throttleman Gary Ballough took delivery of his brand-new 32′ Victory raceboat he plans to campaign during the 2019 season. Today, Ballough and racer John Tomlinson of TNT Custom Marine took the boat out on the Atlantic Ocean in Miami for some preliminary testing.

Like his previous hull, a 32′ Doug Wright, the Victory will be campaigned as FJ Propeller (an abbreviation of Frank & Jimmie’s, the Fort Lauderdale, FL-based propeller shop).

“It was quite a ride,” Ballough told Powerboat Nation. “It’s been a long road, waiting for the boat to get here. It just got done being rigged. So we took it out and shook it down a little bit. We had a good time with it. It was a long time coming.”

The all-carbon-fiber 32′ was shipped from Dubai to Jacksonville, FL. After delivery, Ballough took it to TNT Custom Marine (North Miami, FL) in late March to have it rigged and powered by twin Mercury Racing 300XS Optimax outboards, the required powerplant for his offshore class, Super Stock.

Both Ballough and Tomlinson “thought it was awesome. We were both pretty impressed with it,” he said. But today’s testing, he said, “wasn’t about speed today. We wanted to check everything out. Did the escape hatch hold water? Did it idle? Did it shift? Was it cooling correctly? Were the motor heights reasonable? This was the first time it was in the water, so it was a shakedown run. That’s where you make sure everything’s working. We’ll go do some further tests to see what it will do. But we were really impressed with it in the short amount of time that we went out in it.”

Ballough’s first race in the Victory will be at the kickoff OPA meet May 17-19 in Cocoa Beach, FL. The boat will be primarily driven by Jimmie Harrison and throttled by Ballough.

Brunswick Corp. has promoted Christopher Drees, its President of Marine Parts and Accessories to President of Mercury Marine. The move comes immediately after John Pfeifer left the position to pursue other opportunities outside the company.

Mettawa, IL-based Brunswick’s brands include Mercury Marine, as well as numerous boat companies (Bayliner, Boston Whaler, Crestliner, etc.) and marine parts retailers like Land ’n’ Sea. Drees will report to Brunswick Chief Executive Officer David M. Foulkes.

“Assuming the Mercury presidency is a natural progression for Chris,” Foulkes said. “He has spent more than 20 years with the company, distinguishing himself in a number of varied assignments and making a series of planned career moves to hone his skills and experience in preparation for this well-deserved role. Working alongside Mercury’s experienced and accomplished leadership team, Chris will continue building on the Company’s momentum of innovation, market-leading products and superior quality and customer service.”

Drees joined Mercury in 1998. During his first eight years, he held a variety of positions within the firm, including roles in purchasing, sales and marketing, and as general manager of the Mercury propeller business. From 2006 through 2014, he led Mercury’s Attwood operations, first as chief operating officer and then as president.

“We thank John, who will remain at Mercury for a short time to effect a smooth transition, for his many significant contributions through the years in a variety of roles at Mercury and Brunswick,” Foulkes said. “Having originally joined Brunswick in 2006, John has served as Mercury Marine’s president since 2014. We wish John the very best in his future endeavors.”
