This February 18-20, West Marine will be celebrating the opening of its largest store in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Planning to host a large crowd, West Marine is opening their newest store with a “parking lot” boat show, food trucks, live music, and more. Store Manager Rafa Rodriguez says the goal is to establish a on-stop shop for everything the local or visiting tourists need for having a great time out on the water. The workforce behind the opening of this mega store is made up of 21 Associates with over 275 combined years of experience in boating, cruising, fishing, and more.

“We have a great pool of talent to choose from in this area,” Rodriguez says. “Our associates are as passionate about life on the water as our customers. They’re here to help with any type of questions, from where to go to find fish that are biting, to how to make repairs.”

So if you’re in the San Juan area make sure to give them a visit and see what they can do for you!

The search continues for the 12 marine that have gone missing after the two helicopters collided off Oahu last Thursday night. With no luck so far in the search, underwater efforts are now underway. Coast Guard spokesman Lt. Scott Carr said a Navy diving salvage unit arrived Sunday and deployed a remotely operated vehicle but that no significant discoveries were made.

With optimal sea conditions for underwater exploration, the Coast Guard continued searching overnight Sunday with a patrol boat, and HC-130 Hercules plane, and an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter. “We’re dedicated to trying to locate and bring back these service members,” said Coast Guard Capt. Jim Jenkins. With the extensive help of the navy and about 45 marines walking the shoreline, the search effort was in full force and everyone was optimistic about finding some indication of what had happened to the men. Lifeguards on personal watercraft also searched 160 linear miles on a search pattern tracked by GPS betwen Kahuku and Haleiwa. They were able to recover some wreckage that appeared to be from a military craft but nothing has been confirmed as of yet.

Despite the 78 individual searches completed and the more than 18,000 square miles covered, there has been no evidence or indication that they are getting close to finding the missing men. However, no one is giving up hope and efforts to find the men will continue without break. “Every day, we analyze what we’ve done; we analyze the likelihood of any survivors,” Jenkins said. “We’ll continue our efforts as long as needed.”

State Representative Al Ott is pushing for the safety of children out on the water. While Wisconsin and Virginia are the only two remaining states to not require life jackets for children, Ott’s will would push to change this and require all children to wear a certified life jacket when out on the water in any capacity.

The current law only requires that properly fitting life jackets be readily accessible for each person in the boat. But Rep. Ott sees this as impractical and as surefire setup for failure…

“It doesn’t make sense to have a life jacket in a boat, because when a kid falls over it’s too late to put it on him.”

The proposed bill will mimic the current requirements set on federally regulated waterways such as the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River. Ott compares requiring PFDs on children to child safety seats or childhood immunizations, where preventative measures are key and not an afterthought. While Ott does acknowledge that there is some opposition to the bill in regards that other colleagues think it’s not appropriate to tell parents what to do in regards to their kid’s safety out on the water, he believes that it’s a non issue when truly striving to create a safe boating environment for the young.

U.S. Central Command has released new details about the Iranian seizure of two U.S. military boats. According to the latest update, the two Riverine Command Boats with their ten accompanying sailors drifted into Iranian waters due to engine trouble with the diesel engine on of the boats. As the first boat came to a halt due to the malfunction, the second boat also stopped to provide any necessary assistance.

“This stop occurred in Iranian territorial waters, although it’s not clear the crew was aware of their exact location,” CENTCOM said in a press release. “While the [U.S. boats] were stopped and the crew was attempting to evaluate the mechanical issue, Iranian boats approached the vessels.”

This latest account come in direct contradiction to the Iranian version that states that a “broken navigation” system had resulted in the boats ending up in Iranian waters.

After being taken at gunpoint and ferried to a small port facility on Farsi Island, the ten American Sailors were released after issuing an apology. According to Central Command there is no evidence that the men were harmed in any way and the boats appeared in good condition although they did discover that two SIM cards appeared to have been removed from the satellite phones.

Updates will keep coming shortly.

Abandon Ship!

This morning off the coast of New Zealand, the tourist vessel PeeJay’s entire compliment of 60 people including 53 passengers and 7 crew were forced overboard due to a raging on-board fire. The fire spread from the front of the ship and then after about ten minutes the cabin burst into flames and the fire had engulfed the entire craft. As the fire broke out a little over half a mile from the shore, other ships and authorities sped to the scene to provide assistance to everyone jumping ship as the Captain kept up the mayday call.

All persons were rescued successfully and only one passenger and one crew member were taken immediately to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries and smoke inhalation. Unfortunately the PeeJay could not sustain the damage and sank completely in a matter of minutes. Authorities are still looking for the cause of the fire.

Several years ago, EFI four stroke outboard engines and Electronic Fuel Injected Sterndrive technology took the Marine Service Industry by storm. Service Centers without up to date equipment and sufficient knowledge of these new, technically advanced power plants were suddenly stuck in the dark ages practically overnight. Popular marine service locations, along with knowledgeable technicians, rapidly became “Old School” shops. Although there was still a large group of those that prefered carburetors to EFI, the times were changing and they had to rapidly adapt to stay in the game. The world was embracing the development of new technology at an exponential rate and it has become a “sink or swim” environment.

Bring us to the present day and the “once new” technology is finally beginning to expose its weak points. The service level required to maintain this technology becomes increasingly apparent as more and more boaters begin to experience major problems due to the age and neglect, albeit unknown neglect, of specifically the injectors and their associated parts. For example, if your boat has a Mercury Racing 500EFI or 525EFI or two under the hatch with one fuel injector per cylinder and there are some performance issues with one or more of them your boat with inevitably run much leaner than desired. Injectors are essentially MINI electric carburetors and the specified injectors do exactly what they are told (or try to) by the ECU. The performance and health of the engine is significantly more dependent on the uniform operation of the injectors than one would think. If one or more were to fail that would result in those affected cylinder becoming lean and dying or washing out. The even bigger issue is that although the resultant problem can be identified, the cause tends to remain undiscovered and continues to have the same repeated affects over and over again.

The problem can often go misdiagnosed for years and be blamed on other issues with the engine. A drop in RPM’s or a lack of overall power are the most apparent signs of injector failure but unless you know exactly what you are looking for the problem can seem like the culmination of other issues or simply the result of an aging engine. It’s also easy to blame on props, fuel or whatever else comes to mind. Just like any other part, and perhaps even more so, the injectors need monitoring and servicing to keep them operating at their peak. There’s never a good day when one or more of your injectors is only putting out 50% or 60% of their designated output. Even worse, the engine could lose an entire cylinder or two because of this. Many shops will misdiagnose the issue, do an engine rebuild, and then when the same faulty injectors are used, the engine will be impaired right from the get-go and continue to deteriorate as did the last one. In one particular case an engine was brought in and after the rebuild the only part that was salvaged was a single cylinder. The engine block was irreparable as were the cylinder heads, valves, etc. After completing the rebuild and flowing the injectors, it was discovered that the injectors were operating at less than 50% optimal output. After the much needed injector reconditioning, fuel volume increased by an astounding 52%. This highlights the issue that if those same injectors were used before reconditioning the engine would already be suffering and the cost of rebuild after rebuild would be nothing short of insane. Clearly maintaining the health of your injectors and staying on top of them is an integral part of keeping your engine healthy and performing the way it should be.

Carbon Marine, the Canadian based boat manufacturer, is planning to launch their latest craft the Paragon Super Sport 28 at this year’s Miami International Boat Show. This one-of-a-kind powerboat will feature the world’s first fully exposed, carbon fiber production hull, bringing Carbon Marine to the forefront of the marine industry.

Their new hull design is a game changer. Lighter, faster, and stronger than any traditional fiberglass hull, the design allows for a higher top speed and much improved gas mileage while still maintaining high end aesthetics. Coupled with a Seven Marine 627 HP Supercharged V8 outboard, the craft can top 75 MPH with a range of 300 miles.

For boats under 30 feet this is a complete package. It’s ability to achieve the above mentioned stats and handle itself well in rough water make it an easy go-to for anyone looking to buy in the near future. We’re looking forward to seeing its debut at the who in Miami this February!

Team Gone Again, Kenny Mungle, and Michael Lee Lockwood were in North Miami this morning testing their new 368 SKATER with John Tomlinson of TNT Custom Marine. With the rudder retooled and sharped along with some different props they had hopes of determining whether there was a significant improvement in the boats handling and performance.

Running the twin PSI supercharged 1550 engines that can run up to 7600 RPM, Tomlinson and Mungle pushed the boat hard in the chop water in the bay, locally known as the Bridge to Bridge run today. At 160 MPH Tomlinson reported that although there was some wind and relatively choppy water, “the rudder is much better, much better. It’s definitely handling better at high speed. I want to go back out at the end of the day, and we’ll probably make a drive rotation change after that.”

With the team pleased by the performance this morning, Mungle and Tomlinson are looking forward to more testing this evening where they will be more likely to experience calmer waters. Mungle knows they are making serious headway and won’t be deterred by the expected time frame. “This is a one-off. There’s no set ‘formula’ for it. So it’s going to take little time,” he said.

We’re looking forward to seeing the results of the second round of testing as they are sure to be underway shortly. We expect to see a rotation change from in to out, some additional prop testing and maybe even the addition of crash boxes. You can be sure every detail will be checked, tested, and retested to make sure the absolute best is done to get every MPH out of this spectacular ride!

UPDATE (01/13/16): Gone Again Team chooses to pass and explore different options.
