Early this morning U.S. Coast Guard crews rescued 3 fishermen from their boat that broke loose from its mooring in Bellingham harbor. The 52 foot commercial fishing vessel built in 1939 broke free from its mooring due to an overnight windstorm that swept in around 5am while the crew was sleeping inside.

The Bergen and its crew were tosses against a rock wall that surrounds the harbor and while the crew tried to put on their neoprene emergency suits, two of the four available slid off the boat into the icy waters. One crewman jumped overboard to retrieve his suit and was successful in doing so and returning to the sinking craft. “That probably saved his life,” said Chief Warrant Officer 3 Chuck M. Chavtur, of the Coast Guard, as the power flickered off and on in his office a few hours later.

The rescue efforts were nothing less that extremely difficult in such terrible conditions. With 5 foot swells and the boat at a 45 degree angle slowly slipping into the abyss, Coast Guard crews had to work tirelessly to retrieve the three stranded crewmen clinging to the sinking ship. “We were maneuvering in very shallow water and all the wind and waves were pushing against the stern of the small boat and pushing us against the vessel on the rocks,” Chavtur said..

After many repeated approaches, they were able to save the crew members before the boat went completely under. Everyone returned to the Coast Guard station around 7:15 am.

What makes Powerboat Nation such an iconic brand in today’s world of boating? It’s not that we have the best team members, the largest public reach, or an unparalleled media outlet for all things powerboating. It’s the FACT that we are all a family with the same passion. PowerBoating.

From our dedicated fans and supporters to our advertisers and event volunteers, we make sure that every triumph and success on or off the water is celebrated and turned into powerboat history. But what lasts more than the physical items are the memories themselves. This becomes apparent more than ever when Cincinnati resident, Gary Seeds’ thoughtful kids decided to frame and gift Gary the PBN article written last year when he had his own brand new Cigarette 42X designed and delivered by Cigarette Racing Team itself. A truly amazing moment and memory, this experience will never be forgotten now that it hangs in Gary’s house proudly displayed for all to see. They are truly a part of the awesome PBN family!

There are many boating experiences in all our fans lives worth taking extra time to enjoy and experience and PBN is there to make sure they get the awesome hoopla they deserve! We’re looking forward to seeing what else unfolds as we take on this new season of boating!

Watch the exact moment the crew discovered the drifting sailboat and her mummified captain.

When you see the title, what do you picture? More than likely 2 college athletes or some ultra athletic duo that’s been training for this adventure for years. Well can that image because these are just a couple of ordinary guys doing it for the love of adventure and to raise money for charity.

With the focus being on raising money for the Make-A-Wish foundation as well as brain tumor research,  it’s easy to understand their motivation since one of the rowers’, James Whittle, mom suffered from a sever brain tumor in 2012 but made a complete and full recovery.

Tom Caulfield, James’ friend describes their accomplishment humbly.

“James and I have completed a transatlantic row, 3000 miles across The Atlantic, totally unsupported. Neither of us had ever held an oar or sailed a boat, so we hope we have proved that ordinary people can achieve incredible things.”

Born simply out of passion and a desire for doing good, this team will surely go on to accomplish great things and hope to inspire everyone to dream big and follow through, because no matter who you are or where you come from, greatness is waiting.

While AEM may seem new to some of you these folks have been behind custom performance engines for a long time. Truth be told they have been a best kept secret for a great many years because lets face it if your the secret weapon to any company’s engine program you’re going to hold that close to the cuff.

But restraining something that’s bigger than just the sum of its controls is not possible forever. No matter where we turn we see the AEM name behind powerful , exotic, and competition programs everywhere. We ran across the latest Polaris video with professional driver Tanner Foust and recognized when they were building their custom flagship machine to create the latest in viral video’s that AEM was in charge of the engine management. So we thought we would just share some entertainment for your day… Get a hold of this:

This means the majority of our orders ship the same day”

Today marks a sad day for powerboating as our friend and powerboat racing pro J.R. Noble has passed away. Right now we remain in complete shock after learning of this sad news. It seems like yesterday when we had the opportunity to talk with JR at the Miami Boat Show. In his usual super kind and gracious tone he went on to talk about the new Skater he was having built, what he expected with racing and what he enjoyed while not racing. JR was a leader and was responsible for bringing excitement and competition to offshore racing. JR will be missed but not forgotten. The entire Powerboat Nation team offers our deepest condolences to J.R’s family and friends in this difficult time.

During a recent study of the waters in Biscayne Bay, researchers discovered abnormally high levels of tritium, a rare hydrogen isotope produced by nuclear reactors that is used to track any possible water leakage by a nuclear plants cooling canals. This discovery confirms that the aging cooling canals of Turkey Point are leaking into the nearby Biscayne Bay. The study found that the samples taken in December and January had tritium levels 215 times higher than normal ocean water. While this doesn’t necessarily mean there is actual nuclear spillage, tritium is usually an accurate indicator of potential or current spillage.

The study comes two weeks after a Tallahassee judge ordered the utility and the state to clean up the nuclear plant’s cooling canals after concluding that they had caused a massive underground saltwater plume to migrate west, threatening a wellfield that supplies drinking water to the Florida Keys. The judge also found the state failed to address the pollution by crafting a faulty management plan.

“How much damage is that cooling canal system causing the bay is a question to be answered,” said Everglades Law Center attorney Julie Dick, who had not had a chance to review the report. “There are a lot more unknowns than knowns and it just shows how much more attention we need to be paying to that cooling canal system.”

We’ll be keeping you updated with the situation as it progresses.
