14 months is a really long time to be out at sea…

That’s how long the Gunboat 55 Rainmaker was adrift and abandoned in the Atlantic before being found by members of Oracle Team USA while on a fishing trip. The 55-foot Gunboat was spotted with the hull fully intact and according to Gunboat founder Peter Johnstone, she was hauled in shortly after by the 40-foot Luhrs fishing boat, Tenacious.

“The Gunboat 55 Rainmaker is still in one piece and floating,” Johnstone said on his Facebook page. “Found and apparently under tow [after] 14 months in the North Atlantic. Two winters of gales. That is a will to live on.”

According to Johnstone the boat has been spotted by several people over the past months. “The boat’s tending to itself, even though the crew jumped off, through one of the worst winters on record in the North Atlantic,” he said

It’s longevity is a testament to its design and construction as composite experts say they can’t think of any other structure that would be able to survive intact and afloat for that amount of time under the such stress.

However, the company is still flailing and currently under Chapter 11 restructuring after taking a nose dive due majorly in part to a high profile demasting in 2015.

The boat made news when the Coast Guard rescued millionaire Pinterest investor Brian Cohen, his son and three crewmembers from the $2.5 million boat when its mast broke in heavy winds and high seas about 400 miles off the coast of North Carolina.

We’ll keep you updated with what happens to the company next!

A growing number of studies shows that sewage treatment plants are not killing the superbugs embedded in the millions of gallons of raw sewage being released by Southern California hospitals into municipal sewers, it was reported today. (Fox News)

Search efforts are still continuing after a boating accident last weekend left one child dead due to drowning and two other people missing. Corpus Christi Police said the leisure boat had eight people on board when it overturned in the bay during rough weather on Sunday. The boat was believed to be about a mile off shore from Swantner Park.  After one woman was able to swim ashore and alert the authorities by reaching a nearby apartment complex, emergency personnel then located five other people including a four year old boy who later died after being taken to the hospital.

A girl and a man remain missing. A police statement Monday night said fire department personnel and the Coast Guard are helping with search efforts.

You just can’t make this stuff up…

Canal Mathew, 29, of northern Scotland, was sentenced to 19 months in jail yesterday after he stole a car, then a yacht, and failed to get away with either. Mathew’s first offense was back in November when the man, who was already banned for driving for life, stole an Audi S5 while taking it for a “test drive” before purchasing. After spending some time driving around with the owner, he then convinced the owner to let him take it for a drive on his own… After somehow convincing owner to agree to this he then took the car and ran.

Police were called and the search was on. Mathew spent the evening driving around with his friends and partner, telling them that he owned the car, before leaving them and parking the stolen car in the village harbor around 10:30 p.m.. After no sight of him for at least 24 hours after witnesses saw the car being parked, Mathew was seen by the crew of a standby vessel in Captain oil field about 35 miles east from where the harbor is located. The crew, whose attention was drawn by Mathew firing a flare in distress, sent out a fast rescue craft to retrieve Mathew who told the crew that he was uninjured but wanted to get off the boat.

He ultimately admitted to stealing the yacht and was later brought back to the harbor and the police by a passing ship 48 hours later. Unfortunately for the owner of the yacht, they received no compensation after it washed ashore several days later, badly damaged, and no longer seaworthy.

The owner of the stolen yacht told the BBC that it was “a real disappointment” that he received no compensation in the case, saying, “We worked hard to pay for it. All our savings ended up going into getting it back to sea and he steals it.”

When you hear the name Toyota, you more than likely immediately think of a car, particularly the Prius. An innovative product that has forever changed the auto industry for the better, Toyota is almost synonymous with innovation. But what the general masses don’t realize is that beyond the auto industry, Toyota has its hands in smaller side industries of every type imaginable. That’s why when Toyota announced their newest powerboat concept, the Toyota-28, we realized that this may be something revolutionary. And revolutionary it is.

The Toyota-28 Concept, built in partnership with fellow Japanese manufacturing corporation Yanmar, is a new class of pleasure craft, made unique by it’s innovative new hull. The hull is made from a new combination of fiberglass, carbon fiber, and aluminum. Dubbed the Toyota Hybrid Hull, in a less than subtle nod to their other successes in the auto industry, the hull combines the rigidity of an aluminum hull with the ease of construction of a fiberglass one. According to Yanmar the hull is seven times stronger than its purely fiberglass counterpart, while also weighing 10% less than a comparable aluminum hull. More importantly for the manufacturing side of the industry, the new hull’s design allows for greater flexibility in design so that Toyota can form much more complex shapes and designs that what a typical aluminum hull would allow. All these benefits lead to boats that are faster, more efficient, and sometimes more importantly, cooler looking.

With plans to scale up production this year and the first production model to hit the water in October, we’re eagerly looking forward to see how Toyota makes their concept a reality. If they have any sort of success along the lines of their previous endeavors, then we can expect to see great things coming our way later this year.

When it comes to personalized service from your engine builder/tuner, I am not sure anyone goes the extra step like Tommy from Chief High Performance. Call him on a Sunday when he is at his kids soccer game and he can talk you through a problem. Call him on a late evening and he will flip open his laptop, remote dial in, and check or modify a map in the tune.

In the latest case, call him right before boat school when you are about to go on a 44 Outerlimits with Chief 1350’s turning Arneson drives, and he is at the boat ramp, ready to jump on the boat and plug in while you run the boat steady at different RPM’s to make sure the you are completely happy with the boat’s performance and full potential!

Talking with JR at the Miami Boat Show seems like yesterday and learning of his passing remains nearly unbelievable to us.  JR was a solid leader and was so passionate about his involvement with offshore racing he brought a level of professionalism and leadership that was admired and respected by everyone who know him. JR took the time to talk with us in Miami before his unfortunate and tragic death. But we got a little bit of insight into the man and his thoughts on Offshore Racing which we wanted to share as a tribute to him.

We just never know that the time we do spend together is special and should always be memorable.

For friends and racers, a Memorial Celebration of Life for Robert JR Noble will be held Saturday, 19 March, 2- 5 PM. Hyatt Regency 9801 International Drive in Orlando, FL. Please wear team uniforms or dress casual.

Fast Journey “JR” Rest in Peace…
