Yearly Archives: 2016

Japan’s sleepy west coast in no stranger to the random arrivals of dozens of North Korean boats each year. While most of them arrive empty or little more than a pile of floating wood, more and more are floating out of the haze with a crew of rotting corpses.

At least 14 boats, carrying more that 30 decomposing bodies, have washed up along a 1,000 mile stretch of Japan’s west coast since late last year alone.

Investigators and government officials have yet to come up with a solid reason for the odd appearances of these ghost ships, but they are positive that the boats are from North Korea, many emblazoned with Korean script. One vessel was marked “State Security Department” and another “Korean People’s Army.”

All of the crew of the latest 14 boats were found to be all male, although many of the bodies were so badly decomposed that investigators couldn’t be 100% certain. They did note, however, that all of the corpses appeared to be wearing civilian clothing and that autopsies found that they had been dead for at least 2 months prior to showing up on Japan’s coast. The cause of death is still unknown.

There are many theories as to the reason for the ghost ships, the most prominent being that they are defectors that chose to brave the freezing, stormy sea instead of traveling overland into northeastern China.

Another, more recent theory is that the boats belonged to the North Korean military’s commercial branch.

Workers, Kim said, should “realize their lifetime desire by catching more fish for the servicepersons and civilians,” according to the official Korean Central News Agency.

So in essence, the military has been sending out soldiers to fish at sea and many of these men have little to no training with boats or how to handle themselves on the water. With little to no supplies, no training, and severe weather a normality, those aboard the boats either drowned, starved, or succumbed to hypothermia.

The town of Wakima is no stranger to these morbid occurrences. Many people have committed suicide by jumping to their deaths from the coastal cliffs nearby. And between 1977 and 1983, North Korean agents abducted at least 17 Japanese citizens from, including several that lived nearby. Many locals still harbor anger for the abductions and seek retribution, so the cremated ashes from any of the North Korean bodies found washing ashore are given to the monks at the Soujiji Buddhist temple, where they rest in peace.

“They’re being held no differently than the other ashes,” the monk said. “In death, we treat everyone the same.”

When you hear the name Havasu your first thoughts are massive high performance boats, girls in bikinis, and parties like nowhere else in the nation. That’s whats in store this year for the West Coast’s largest and most off-the-hook performance boating event.

Right now, if you are a big horsepower powerboat enthusiast, you know the Lake Havasu Desert Storm Poker Run is only days away. The Lake Havasu Poker Run is one of those events that draws a large spectator crowd, and as usual, the spectator boats are encouraged to raft up early to keep the main lanes of the lake open. The usual popular locations for the raft which include Black Meadow, Havasu Palms, Steam Boat Cove, and Pump Station. At the moment it looks like the general consensus is leaning towards the Pump Station as the best place to be in order to get a great view of the boats running by.

The Coast Guard has officially suspended its search for a possible sinking sailboat Monday off the Isles of Shoals.

The distress call, which came in Sunday night and identified a craft named the Whiskey Rose as a sailboat rapidly taking on water, was cut off before being able to give a location. Coast Guard vessels from New Hampshire and air search teams from Cape Cod were sent out yet were unable to find the vessel after searching hundreds of square miles over a sixteen hour period.

The search was suspended yesterday after it was discovered that there is no record of any vessel by that name, nor any information about missing crew members.

There are ultimately three different possible scenarios at this point. The call could have been a hoax. The boat could be a newly sold boat that was not yet registered and therefore it could have possibly sank that night. Or the boat will make it to port shortly and the proper channels will be notified to conclude the open investigation.

DEA officials have reported that approximately $400 million in cocaine has been seized in just the last three months on the water surrounding the United States.

With seizures coming from various agencies including the coast guard, most of the cocaine has been taken from go fast vessels or narco submarines. But what’s more interesting is that they claim over 1,500 pounds has been found simply floating on the water.

With such a massive amount already seized this year it’s not hard to imagine the amount that slips through our nets.

Thursday afternoon, six people escaped from a powerboat fire that engulfed the entire boat that they were riding in.

Five teenage boys and a man were using the boat for inner tubing on Lake Whatcom when the 17-foot fiberglass boat burst into flames. The passengers immediately exited the boat after hearing a loud pop from the inboard motor before it exploded, turning the boat into an inferno.

None of the boys or the man were injured and they were safely transported to land by a boat after a sea plane landed near the crash to provide assistance and let them use the plane as a flotation device.

Meanwhile, firefighters towed the boat around with their own boat, in figure eights, as it continued to burn near Hallock’s wooden dock. As the fire died down they brought the boat closer to shore, nudging the flaming wreckage against the edge of the dock for a moment, but leaving no serious damage. They extinguished the flames with fire hoses on the shoreline.

According to fire officials, the Topock Fire that’s burning north of Lake Havasu City has grown to 1,438 acres.

The blaze is continuing to rage on as firefighters have closed down Oatman Highway from I-40 to Golden Shores in order to continue battling the blaze. As of now the fire is burning on both the Arizona side and the California side of the Colorado River.

The firefighters have made a stand against the quickly growing fire on the California side at the Pirate’s Cove Resort in an attempt to save the popular boating spot. While no structures have been burned yet there is still concern over embers and the reports are coming in that the resort has been damaged, although to what extent is unknown.

Mandatory evacuations are in place for the Moabi area which is near Pirate’s Cove. Unfortunately, the fire is expected to grow much larger since it has already burned over 1,400 acres and only 5% has been reported as contained.

Conditions are expected to worsen with winds reaching 25-30 mph and the forecast being hot and dry.
