Yearly Archives: 2016

Rio De Janerio has been plagued by countless problems ahead of the 2016 Olympics.

From the Zika Virus, to rising crime and low ticket sales, it’s been one thing after another. And now, sailors practicing on Guanabara Bay are reporting that the water is so filthy due to pollutants as well as an oil slick that their boats are literally being turned brown.

“We’ve never seen anything like this. It was all over the place,” said Finnish sailor Camilla Cedercreutz. “There was no way you could avoid it.”

Cedercreutz’s sailing partner Noora Ruskola said other sailors told her: “Your boat looks like a toilet.”

Reports from other teams are coming in as well that boats were being turned completely brown, but even worse is that everyone is seeing countless numbers of dead fish in the water. Keep in mind this same water is going to be used for sailing, rowing, canoeing, and even open-water swimming.

Rio organizing committee officials say the venue is safe, although independent studies by the Associated Press show high levels of pathogens in waters that Rio is using for sailing, rowing, canoeing and open-water swimming.

World Sailing, the governing body of the sport, said Monday it was “not in a position to comment.”

SARASOTA - Several powerboat classes will be racing in this year's Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix. Powerboat and jet ski races are Saturday and Sunday directly off Lido Beach. (Photos provided.) (June 30, 2015)

Since 1985, summers in Sarasota, FL have been inundated by the constant, blood pumping sound of ultra high performance powerboats thundering around the race course set up just offshore. Growing bigger and bigger every year,  this year is following suit, promising to be the biggest Sarasota Grand Prix to date!

The headlining event is the P1 Superstock races on Saturday and Sunday. The races encompass all levels of boats from slower production class boats to the Extreme Class boats that hit upwards of 150 mph on the race course. The races are part of the Powerboat P1 race circuit which feature open canopy 28-foot panther boats. With designated areas for spectators to watch from their boats or the shores, including a VIP section, we hope to see you out there rooting for your favorite team!

Don’t miss the Block Party! Friday is when the streets shut down and all of the powerboats and their teams will be on display starting at 6 p.m. There’s going to be tons of live music featuring Tampa band Luna Blue, food, drinks, and all beverage merchandise sales go directly to the charity.

Unfortunately this year there will be no parade since the Thunder By The Bay parade drew lots of criticism from local businesses after the streets were shut down, so make sure to get in all your partying on Friday at the block party while you have the chance!

Mud wrestler or maybe monster wrangler you make the decision with your own eyes. Yep, that’s Brittany not some powder puff princess but actually a semi pro mud truck racer. Driving as part of the JW Davis team from aboveaveragetrucks.com the sister company to Davis Auto Sales one of the East Coast’s custom truck leaders who has probably put more used Ford F650, International CXT’s, and Freightliner’s under our legion of boaters than anyone.

At this seasons opening Mud Bog event last weekend the aboveaveragetrucks.com three truck team converged on Greens Raceway park Virginia and Dominated the competition taking two first place finishes while our PBN princess Brittany was limited to a fourth place finish among a all male 11 truck field due to a failed transmission and a loss of high gear.

The Square body Chevrolet she pilot features the latest in mud truck equipment from a custom chassis to 2-1/2 ton rockwell military style axles. The fire breathing big block Chevy is no match for this little lady’s lead foot as she literally floors it wide open the entire course wheeling this monster through a mud pit that consumed nearly 90% of the near 100 competitors. Congrats to Brittany on her low 6 second run and the entire team for their dominant performance. For more on Brittany Dunn visit the archives of her here at Powerboatnation.com

The Texas Outlaw Challenge Poker Run once again proved that everything is bigger in Texas. With hundreds of boats converging in Seabrook, Texas, on Clearlake near Houston, the fantastic sights and sounds of Performance Powerboating filled the area. They brought out enthusiastic participants, cheering fans and even thoroughly impressed some other eager spectators.

Kenny Armstrong outdid himself again by providing the venue, food, beverages and entertainment for what has to be the most outrageous private party attended by boaters in the world. The count? Somewhere around 165 boats were tied up at Kenny’s house this year, more cars than last year, and of course some very beautiful girls all claiming to hail from TEXAS!

Powerboat Nation was again fortunate enough to ride along with Chris and Angela Bradly on their incredibly well appointed 39 Nor-Tech, running well over 70 MPH full of fuel and people. We also managed to catch a ride with Mr. John Woodruff on the Windship Bell Long Ranger Helicopter to get the aerial shots of Kenny’s party.

The Texas Outlaw Challenge again proved to be an extraordinary event with extraordinary friends who share the love of performance powerboating.

We all know that Texas does it bigger. And the Texas Outlaw Challenge was no exception.

Even with way less than desirable conditions, Kenny Mungle and Michael Lee Lockwood did it again! They were able to hold on through a turbulent ride to achieve 167 MPH on radar at this past weekend’s event. Many of the boats that planned to run just simply didn’t due to harsh weather conditions and opted to instead just enjoy the Poker Run.

Get a glimpse below at the Shootout Results as well as the first place run by Team Gone Again!

Sheyenne’s Law, in honor of 17-year-old Sheyenne Marshall that was killed last year by an impaired boater while knee boarding, has been officially signed into law.

Monday, Governor Pat McCrory signed the law into effect with the hopes of both raising awareness about impaired boating as well as putting a stop to it as much as possible.

After the incident on July 4th of last year, it became very apparent that a misdemeanor did not fit the charges for impaired boating, especially in a case like this where the victim was killed. Keith Cerven had a blood alcohol content of 0.14 when the incident happened yet he was only charged with a misdemeanor as a result. This struck a cord with the community who feel that raising the charges to a felony from here on out will not only serve some level of justice for the victims of such tragedies, but more importantly discourage people from being careless and engaging in such reckless boating.

“It’s hard knowing that regardless of the tragedy on the lake, people are still going to go out there probably drinking, there’s probably going to be another tragedy. But, I hope people will learn from this law and make good choices from that,” Carly Kruse, a fellow softball teammate of Sheyenne’s said.
