The powerboating community lost another two members this past weekend when their boat crashed Saturday morning on Lake Michigan near East Chicago.

The two victims have been identified as Timothy Dunlap, 62, of Lynwood, and Richard Wade, 68, of Hammond. After the craft hit a break wall at 3 a.m. both men were pronounced dead at the scene from blunt force trauma. There was a third passenger on the craft that crashed that managed to survive by swimming for nearly two hours without a life jacket before being picked up and taken to St. Catherine Hospital.

According to the Lake County Sheriff’s office, contributing factors were reduced visibility, speed, and alcohol.

The Pirates of Lanier Poker Run has always been a great event with wonderful diversity of activities attracting a wide variety of boaters.  Hosted from a first class resort Pirates of Lanier brings out the very best from everyone. This year may just be a record breaking fundraising year.

Powerboat Nation offers a special thank you to the entire Board from Lanier Partners and all the supporters and volunteers who work so hard to make this incredible boating event happen every year!

We hope you enjoy our video!

There’s nothing more impressive than fourteen-year-old Christopher Harris having the quick thinking to follow a pair of suspected boat thieves with his drone after he spied them tying up his family’s zodiac to their vessel before taking off with it in tow.

Christopher promptly launched his helicopter drone and followed them as far as the drone’s range would allow before alerting the police to the final direction and suspected landing point of the thieves.

“I was thinking that over the water was the best way to follow them, because the islands are too dense with trees,” he said. “Once they’re on land, they’re gone.”

Thanks to Christopher, the police were able to intercept the thieves at their intended point of landing and after a short period of time the couple confessed to having stolen the zodiac as well as the larger 18-foot boat that they used to tow it.

Sunsation Powerboats‘ partner Jared Morris has gone awhile without a brand new Sunsation to ride around in because they are so damn busy building new boats for customers they haven’t had time to build one for him.

This changed when Jared forced a new build with some incredibly special features. This new 34 CCX “Diamond Edition” features some very custom interior features done by Waves and Wheels. The full Alcantara XO material with incredibly detailed stitching and design has set a new standard for these CCX interiors. In addition to the upholstery, Waves and Wheels installed one of their remarkable stereo systems as well as Sea Deck Flooring. The ultra unique custom paint was handled by Clayton at Custom Colors.

The Waves and Wheels options are now a feature Sunsation has available for all new Sunsation builds made available through a new partnership Sunsation has developed with Waves and Wheels.

Sunsation has also modified the full fiberglass top to actually provide lift characteristics to the boat and make it become a functional piece of how the boat rides and handles. Running triple 400R Mercury Racing outboards has pushed the boat to a top speed of 90.999 MPH with a special setup.

We cant wait for LOTO because we already have this boat on the ride list. If you are wondering, the boat is not for sale… Well, not just yet, unless you make Jared an offer he can’t refuse.  Jared said he wants to be able to actually have some fun with it because he knows if he sells it now it will be a long time before he is able to force another one just for him. Sunsation is built out until August of 2017, making the wait for a new boat a long and anxious process.

A record number of boats turned up for the 2016 Pirates of Lanier Charity Poker Run. The start of the Poker Run was modified following the tragedy of the day before, but the spirit of giving continued as usual. A record number of boats and huge contributions all went to the benefit of the supported organizations .

Pirates of Lanier is an incredible event, hosted by a great board of organizers who are truly dedicated to being great hosts. But the top priority is to raise money for those in need in the surrounding areas.

Powerboat Nation again had the privilege of being invited to cover the event and participate in the great powerboating camaraderie and spirit of giving.

Powerboat Nation recently attended the Biloxi Poker Run and had the great opportunity to run the all new 32 Sonic Powerboats Super Cat rigged with Mercury Racing 400R outboards.

The 32 Cat measures in with an overall length of 32’7″ and a beam of  10’6″, capable of carrying 300 gallons of fuel, seating for 5 and a dry displacement of 7,000 lbs.

In the moderately rough and windy conditions around Biloxi, consisting of 2 to 3 foot waves and 15 knots of wind, the boat performed remarkably well.  A top speed of 107 MPH was recorded with regular stock 4 Blade Mercury propellers, a half tank of fuel, and two male adults on board. There is no doubt with a proper set of propellers the boat will really step out and go.

The deep seated cockpit holds 5 very comfortable and securely.  Another notable feature is how well backseat vision is along with good wind protection.

With the high end TAOD paint job, custom interior, and 400R Mercury Racing Outboards, the boat is offered at just under $250,000.00. Not a bad price considering all you get, but you can also order the same performance without the extra cost of paint and other amenities for far less than you can imagine. Call SONIC Powerboats and get more details on this great performing catamaran.

The final night at Pirates of Lanier Charity Poker Run can go long.  The reason it goes long is because of the huge generosity of the participants who have the need to give.   For the past four years Jarrett Gorlin has stood at the final table until he has won the top prize only to give it all back to support the charities.

This year Michael Pierce, from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, hit the final table hard and was able to draw a Royal Flush well before Jarrett.  Most of us, myself include left to know Michael had won and all was well with the world. But Hell No! Jarrett was having none of it and despite drawing longer into the night and digging even deeper into his pockets for yet another $1000 after another $1000, even having Michael draw cards for him as he continued to give. Jarrett would not leave until he prevailed and prevail he did as he was able to draw a matching royal flush. Now it was down to the wire and the chance draw of one card per player with the high card winning. Michael’s 9 of Hearts just couldn’t beat the King of Diamonds pulled by Jarrett’s proxy, the man with the winning touch, Dylan Floyd who is also the head of the Sigma Nu Fraternity at Georgia Tech who led 28 other Fraternity Brothers as volunteers at the event. Dylan has been the lucky hand, pulling cards for Jarrett for at least the past two years of his winning streak!

Congratulations to all and a huge thank you to everyone who contributed to raise so much money for the event. The final amount raised is expected to be revealed soon right here on PowerboatNation.com!

Monday night around 11 p.m. the call came in of a disabled boat drifting down the river towards the massive Niagara Falls. After hitting a reef and becoming adrift, the boaters were able to notify the Coast Guard that their 18-foot boat was slowly heading towards the falls with no rescue in sight.

Unfortunately at the time there were high winds and the hazardous rescue was unable to proceed with the planned helicopter approach. After two and a half hours of unsuccessful attempts to reach the drifting boat, officials at nearby hydropower plants used dams to lower the level of the Niagara, grounding the small boat about a half a mile from the drop offs.

With winds still preventing any attempts by helicopter to reach the stranded craft, the NY State Police were able to send a rescue boat and reach the vessel, bringing the Buffalo man and woman ashore.
